Below we share these recommendations from Mectron to prevent the spread of COVID-19<\/strong>. Don’t let your guard down!<\/p>\n

Recommended use of the handpiece and patient position<\/h2>\n

It is recommended to tilt the handpiece<\/strong> to avoid possible splashing and to reduce the risk of dispersion of potentially contaminated material and therefore of a potential contagion.<\/p>\n

The air-polishing handpiece should be held at a distance of 3-4 mm from the tooth surface<\/strong> and with an inclination of 60\u00b0 towards the vestibular and lingual sides of the anterior teeth.<\/p>\n

The occlusal surfaces have to be treated by holding the mouthpiece of the air-polishing handpiece at a 90\u00b0 angle<\/strong> to the occlusal surface.<\/p>\n

The mouthpiece of the air polishing handpiece has to be fixed in an angle of 80\u00b0<\/strong> towards the vestibular, lingual and palatal surfaces of the posterior teeth and always kept in a distance of 3-4 mm from the tooth surface.<\/p>\n

The patient should have the head turned completely to the right or to the left<\/strong>, depending on the side of the mouth to be treated.<\/p>\n

This position allows full access to the areas that need treatment, the retraction of the oral mucosa and tongue facilitate the simultaneous evacuation of aerosol spills.<\/p>\n

General aspects to be taken into account<\/h2>\n

1. Before starting the treatment, it is recommended to perform a one-minute rinse<\/strong> with 1.5% H2O2 and 0.20% chlorhexidine to reduce the microbial load. This will decrease the patient’s load by up to 70%.<\/p>\n

2. Reduce the spray<\/strong> by intermittently using the device: to do this, the ratio between the power and the flow of the irrigation solution must be properly adjusted.<\/p>\n

3. Use the double suction<\/strong>: suction with standard cannula and AVA (High Velocity Aspiration) to reduce up to 95% of the diffusion of potentially polluting aerosols from the air – High Volume Suction system.<\/p>\n

4. Use a lip separator<\/strong> connected to the aspiration device and an extra aspiration to be placed near the oral cavity.<\/p>\n

5-6. Keep the suction terminal<\/strong>s as close as possible to the area to be treated in order to reduce the aerosols as much as possible.<\/p>\n

Ultrasound<\/h2>\n

1. In the presence of biofilm<\/strong> or non-calcified deposits, reduce the power and irrigation level of the devices by ultrasound.<\/p>\n

2-3. It is preferable to use a device that allows for precise regulation of both water flow and the amplitude of movement of the insert<\/strong>. To do this, it is recommended that the SOFT MODE be used in order to minimize the production of aerosols without affecting the effectiveness of the treatment.<\/p>\n
